At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
